KUMU ST-02 Ohko Stone (250 g) — SKU 106-702
A yellowish-brown stone with a distinctively bumpy, pitted texture. Ohko Stone (also known as Dragon Stone) is one of the most popular aquascaping stones due to its dramatic appearance, ease of use, and minimal impact on water chemistry. The eroded, weathered surface creates natural aged character instantly.
Key Characteristics:
- Color: Yellowish-brown to tan with darker brown or orange accents in pits and crevices
- Texture: Heavily pitted and eroded surface resembling ancient weathered rock or dragon scales
- Form: Irregular, chunky pieces with natural holes, tunnels, and depressions
- Weight: Approximately 250 g per pack
- Size Range: 30–80 mm individual pieces (typically 3–5 stones per pack)
Aquascaping Applications:
- Natural Biotope Layouts: Recreate rocky riverbeds, mountain streams, or canyon walls
- Iwagumi Variations: Use Ohko's rugged texture as a counterpoint to traditional smooth Seiryu or Ryuoh stones
- Paludarium Backgrounds: Stack Ohko Stone vertically to create cliff faces for emersed plants and mosses
- Contrast With Fine Textures: The rough stone pairs beautifully with delicate plants like Rotala or fine-leaved Ludwigia
Chemical Properties:
Ohko Stone is highly inert and has virtually no impact on pH or water hardness. This makes it one of the safest stones for soft-water aquariums, blackwater biotopes, and setups with sensitive fish (Discus, Crystal Shrimp, Apistogramma). You can use Ohko Stone in any water chemistry without concern.
Combining Tips:
- With Itself: Ohko pieces stack and interlock naturally. use the pits and holes to create caves and overhangs
- With Driftwood: The warm brown tones of Ohko complement most driftwood species (Manzanita, Spiderwood, Mopani)
- With Plants: Ohko's crevices are perfect for tucking moss, Anubias, or Bucephalandra—roots will grip the porous surface easily
Planting Strategy:
- Fill Ohko's natural depressions with substrate to create planting pockets for small stem plants or carpets
- Attach mosses (Taxiphyllum, Fissidens, Flame Moss) to the stone using fishing line or DOOA Terra Line—the texture provides excellent grip
- Use Ohko as a midground focal point, surrounded by carpeting plants (Monte Carlo, Dwarf Hairgrass)
Preparation:
3. Optional: Boil for 10 minutes to sterilize and accelerate saturation
4. Scrub crevices with a stiff brush to remove stubborn dust
Maintenance:
- The pitted surface traps detritus easily—siphon carefully around the stone during water changes
- Algae often colonizes Ohko quickly (the rough texture provides excellent attachment)—this can enhance the natural look or be scrubbed away
- Shrimp and small fish love hiding in Ohko's holes and tunnels—a functional benefit beyond aesthetics
